Covid-19 Q&A

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a flu-like illness caused by the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It causes symptoms like fever, cough, and fatigue — but may cause life-threatening complications in some people. COVID-19 testing is the only way to detect the virus.

As COVID spreads around the world, testing is the best way to keep you, your loved ones, and community at large safe from infection.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Some of the main symptoms of COVID-19 include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coughing
  • Body or muscle aches
  • Headaches
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

These symptoms may develop 2-14 days after being exposed to COVID-19.

What are the different types of COVID-19 testing?

Toseg Medical Center offers the following types of COVID-19 testing:

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests

PCR tests detect the presence of the COVID-19 genetic material as it breaks down. It’s highly reliable and accurate, but it may take several hours to receive the results.

Antigen tests

Antigen tests, or rapid testing, detect antigens on the surface of cells. These tests take just 15-30 minutes. Rapid tests are the most accurate when tested on patients within a few days of the onset of symptoms.

Antibody testing

Antibody tests are blood tests that detect the presence of COVID-19 antibodies in your bloodstream. A positive test means you’ve likely had COVID-19 in the past or have antibodies because of being vaccinated against COVID-19.

How can vaccines help with COVID-19?

Toseg Medical Center offers COVID-19 vaccines to patients of all ages. The vaccines contain mRNA materials that trigger your body to make antibodies, which protect you from becoming severely ill from COVID.

After receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, you may develop a headache, low-grade fever, or body aches, but these symptoms are temporary. Many people find that that the benefits of vaccines may outweigh experiencing these minor side effects.

What treatments are available for COVID-19?

If you have a positive test, your Toseg Medical Center provider can help you manage your symptoms. They might recommend prescription medications, breathing treatments, or other COVID-19 treatments. It’s important to get plenty of rest and drink a lot of fluids. Limit your exposure to other people to avoid spreading COVID-19.
